PAOLO PELLEGRETTI

Esaote, Ultrasound System Design and Research Manager

Paolo Pellgretti got the degree in Electronic Engineering at the University of Genoa, Italy, in 1991. In 1995 he received the PhD in Pattern Recognition discussing a thesis on Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar. From 1996 on he is in Esaote and he was involved in many projects addressing different processing aspects of an ultrasound imaging chain. In about 25 years of activities he was involved in researches on beamforming, non-linear filtering and transmission imaging signal processing. Particularly, as member of a joint Bracco-Esaote research team, he maturated great experience in studying and developing of dedicated hardware and software solutions for ultrasound contrast processing. Recently, from 2008 to 2011, he was leader of a project in cooperation between Esaote and a start-up USA company (Techniscan, Salt lake City , Utah) for the development of an innovative 3D transmission and reflection ultrasound breast scanner. From 2015 to 2020 he was leader of the System Design and Advanced Applications team in Esaote. At present he is the director of the Ultrasound Research and Development Department of Esaote.

Topic: Personalized Stress Management for Pregnant Women from Underserved Communities

MARCO LEVORATO

University of California, Irvine - Associate Professor

Marco Levorato is an Associate Professor in the Computer Science department at UC Irvine. He completed the PhD in Electrical Engineering at the University of Padova, Italy, in 2009. Between 2010 and 2012, he was a postdoctoral researcher with a joint affiliation at Stanford and the University of Southern California. His research interests are focused on distributed computing over unreliable wireless systems, especially for autonomous vehicles and healthcare systems. His work received the best paper award at IEEE GLOBECOM (2012). In 2016 and 2019, he received the UC Hellman Foundation Award and the Dean mid-career research award, respectively. His research is funded by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, Intel and Cisco.

Abstract: Maternal care aims to improve the overall health and welfare of an unborn child and pregnant women. The quality of maternal care in the US often depends on the individual's socioeconomic status and access to health care, education, and type of insurance; consequently underserved communities either do not receive satisfactory care or receive delayed and infrequent care, resulting in poor birth outcomes and a decline in the mother's overall health. Contemporary nursing models emphasize the role of self-management. In this talk, I will provide an overview of the UNITE project, whose objective is to integrate traditional maternal care with low-cost IoT-based monitoring and intervention. In particular, I will discuss the solutions we developed for stress detection and management, and the many technical challenges we encountered. Specifically, I will first focus on the multi-tiered edge-cloud we built to collect a wide spectrum of signals from wearable and mobile sensors, as well as the techniques we deployed to make information flow and real-time analysis possible given the communication and computing constraints of the devices composing the system. Then, I will illustrate the need for personalized algorithms, and the associated online learning problem, which requires innovative - context-aware - approaches to real-time data collection.
